Burna Boy: On Global Afrobeats, Creative Freedom and His Next Chapter

Burna Boy discusses global Afrobeats, creative freedom and his next chapter in a new interview

Interviewer: Afrobeats has become a global force. What does that growth mean to you personally?

Burna Boy: It means the world is finally listening to African music on a much bigger scale. But for me, the goal has always been to make music that represents where I come from while still connecting with people everywhere.

Interviewer: You recently shared the stage with Shakira for the FIFA World Cup. What did that global moment mean to you?

Burna Boy: It was a powerful moment. Football and music bring people together across cultures, so being part of an event watched around the world was special.

Burna Boy and Shakira performed “Dai Dai,” the official 2026 FIFA World Cup song, during the tournament’s opening celebrations in Mexico City.

Interviewer: How do you balance Nigerian identity with an increasingly international audience?

Burna Boy: I don’t see them as opposites. My Nigerian identity is part of what makes my music unique. I can embrace global sounds without losing the culture and experiences that shaped me.

Interviewer: What continues to challenge you creatively?

Burna Boy: Trying to surprise myself. Once you’ve achieved certain things, you can’t simply repeat them. You have to keep exploring.

Interviewer: What do you want people to understand about Afrobeats?

Burna Boy: That it’s bigger than a trend. African artists have always had stories, rhythms and cultures worth sharing. The world is simply hearing more of them now.

Interviewer: What is the next chapter about for you?

Burna Boy: Growth. More music, bigger stages and continuing to represent Africa at the highest level.
