For UK rapper and songwriter JOHKES, music has become a way of making sense of a life that changed dramatically in 2023. Based in Lincoln with Leicester roots, the independent artist is preparing to release Peace I Can’t Wake To, a deeply personal 14-track album arriving on 24 September 2026.
Rather than presenting another collection of songs simply built around beats and hooks, JOHKES approaches the album as a story. Its foundations were laid following a serious road accident and coma in 2023, with the experiences and emotions that followed becoming the creative fuel for his most personal project to date.
The album explores recovery, family, grief, guilt, forgiveness and identity, while also making room for the dark humour that can emerge from confronting difficult circumstances. At its centre is a striking contrast: the sense of peace JOHKES remembers from being unconscious versus the complicated reality of waking up and having to rebuild his life.
Now a wheelchair user, the rapper does not shy away from the realities of his experience. Instead, he channels them into story-led hip-hop that feels personal without losing its wider human relevance. Peace I Can’t Wake To becomes more than an album title—it represents the tension between wanting to hold onto a moment of peace and having to confront everything that comes after it.
JOHKES’ approach also reflects the storytelling tradition at the heart of hip-hop. His songs provide space for reflection while examining experiences that can be difficult to articulate outside of music. The combination of vulnerability, honesty and dark humour gives the project its own identity, allowing serious themes to exist alongside moments of personality and perspective.
The forthcoming album has already begun attracting independent attention. Recent coverage from The LA Note described the project as an exploration of a coma and its aftermath, while Stuck in the Middle highlighted JOHKES as a Lincoln rapper turning trauma into powerful hip-hop.
With Peace I Can’t Wake To scheduled for release this September, JOHKES is offering listeners something more meaningful than a conventional album campaign. It is a personal document of survival, change and identity—and an opportunity to hear how one artist has transformed an experience that altered his life into a body of music designed to tell his story.
For listeners looking for independent hip-hop with substance, personality and a genuine story behind it, JOHKES is an artist worth watching.
