From Rockabilly to Americana: The Musical Journey Behind Texan Raiders

With a career spanning record deals, chart success, award-winning television compositions and a lifelong passion for country music, the creative force behind Texan Raiders is bringing decades of musical experience to a new project.

Every musical project has a story behind it, but few journeys take in teenage rockabilly bands, Nashville adventures, dance chart success and award-winning television productions. For the musician behind Texan Raiders, these experiences have all contributed to the creation of The Adventures of Glenn the Cowboy.

The project represents a return to one of his earliest musical passions: American roots music. Growing up in Yorkshire, he developed an interest in rockabilly and country, forming his first band, The Hell Cats, at just 15. What began as a teenage fascination would eventually become a musical journey spanning several decades and genres.

A Nashville Inspiration

A trip to Nashville and Memphis in 1987 proved particularly influential. Visiting iconic locations including Sun Studios and Graceland offered a closer connection to the artists and musical traditions that had inspired him.

The experience helped establish a lasting ambition to create music that reflected the character and storytelling of American country music.

However, his career would take several unexpected turns before that ambition became Texan Raiders.

Previously signed to Perfecto under the name Skipraiders, he achieved a No. 1 position in the dance charts with ‘Another Day’, which also featured in the film Kevin & Perry Go Large.

His creative work extended into television composition, earning two Royal Television Society awards, two BAFTA nominations and two international Telly Awards for the animated series Odo. The series also received recognition at the British Animation Awards.

These achievements demonstrate a creative career that has never been limited to one musical style.

Bringing Decades of Experience Into Country Music

With Texan Raiders, the focus returns to melodic songwriting, Americana influences and the storytelling traditions that first inspired his musical interests.

The album The Adventures of Glenn the Cowboy brings together a collection of songs shaped by personal experiences, collaboration and a genuine appreciation for country music.

One of its tracks, ‘Log Settee’, explores the importance of meaningful conversations and spending time with loved ones. Another, ‘All About Ya’, came together following a meeting with songwriter Gavin Alexander at a Chris Difford songwriting retreat in Italy.

The project also features an accomplished group of musicians, including pedal steel player CJ Hillman, fiddle player Ben Ivitsky, bassist Rory Dempsey and several other contributors.

A New Creative Direction

Texan Raiders also introduces an imaginative visual element through Glenn, an animated cowboy whose personality and adventures complement the music.

Together with Glenda, his on-and-off girlfriend, Glenn provides a humorous way to explore the stories behind the songs. The characters have the potential to develop into something much bigger, with ambitions to explore an animated country music series in the future.

The upcoming release of ‘Diamonds in the Dust’, planned for Valentine’s Day, will mark the next stage of the project’s musical journey, followed by the more upbeat ‘Wahoo Feelin’ Alive’.

For an artist whose career has moved through rockabilly, dance music, television and now Americana, Texan Raiders brings together many different creative influences under one identity.

Rather than simply revisiting the sounds of the past, The Adventures of Glenn the Cowboy offers an opportunity to combine that musical heritage with a fresh approach to country music storytelling.
