Pitching Spotify’s editorial team is one of the few direct ways to ask for playlist consideration — and it’s free. It’s not a guarantee, but skipping it means leaving an easy opportunity on the table. Here’s exactly how to do it.
What editorial playlists are
Editorial playlists are curated by Spotify’s own editors. You submit one unreleased song through Spotify for Artists, and the team decides whether it fits any of their playlists. Even if it isn’t picked, an accurate, well-tagged pitch helps Spotify’s systems understand your music.
How to pitch, step by step
- Make sure your song is delivered to Spotify with a future release date (upload through your distributor two to four weeks ahead).
- In Spotify for Artists, go to Music, then Upcoming.
- Select your song and open the pitch form.
- Fill in every field — genre, mood, instruments, and the story behind the track.
- Submit at least 7 days before release. Two to four weeks is far better, as editors plan ahead and the very minimum gives them little time.
Pitching at least seven days early also guarantees the song lands in your followers’ Release Radar on release day.
Write a pitch that stands out
You only get one song per release and limited space, so be specific. Skip clichés like “song of the summer,” and instead describe exactly where it fits — the genre and mood, comparable artists, and any context like press, tour dates or a cultural angle. A pitch that reads “melancholic indie-folk for late-night drives” beats a generic one every time.
What if you don’t get picked
Most pitches aren’t selected — there are far more submissions than slots. That’s normal. Songs often get picked up later through algorithmic discovery or independent playlists, so keep releasing, keep your tags accurate, and focus on building real engagement.
Quick FAQ
- Can I pitch after release? No — the window closes on release day. You can only pitch unreleased music.
- How many songs can I pitch? One per release. Choose your strongest track deliberately.
- Does pitching help even if I’m not picked? Yes — accurate tags help the algorithm place your song.
